Mrs. G: “Kindred Gave Me My Life Back”
Mrs. G. was an accounts payable supervisor for 20 years and is currently retired. She is married with 3 children, 3 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. G. suffered from asthma as a child, and as an adult from end stage renal disease requiring dialysis three times a week. She was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital for exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There, her respiratory status deteriorated requiring intubation and he became septic due to ventilator-associated pneumonia. After several failed weaning attempts, she was trached.
“I woke up in the hospital with a tube in my mouth,” says Mrs. G. “I could not remember how I arrived there. The doctors told me that I wasn’t weaning well and that they wanted to send me to another hospital that has more success in weaning.”

Within the first few days the staff noticed that she was not motivated to participate in her care. She was resistant to weaning attempts and often demanded to have the weaning stopped. The caring and nurturing nursing staff, respiratory staff and rehabilitation staff coached her and assisted Mrs. G. to understand her potential to be weaned off the ventilator and regain her former lifestyle.
Within one month, Mrs. G. made incredible progress. She was successfully weaned off the vent and decannulated and was able to eat a regular diet. She was discharged home with a nasal cannula required no ambulatory assistance.
